“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah
to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace. (Sura Al-Ahzaab: 56).
The honour of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in this world is that he discusses his
words with the angels. Moreover, he exalts his name. He has exalted his name from before. As a result, he has included
his name along with the name of Allah in the Adhan, Iqamah, etc.; spread his religion in the world, made it strong;
continued the work of his Sharia until the Day of Judgment and took upon himself the responsibility of safeguarding his
Sharia.
On the other hand, his honour in the Hereafter is that He has placed his place above the entire creation and has given
him the power of intercession, which is called “Maqam-e-Mahmud.”
It is important to remember that in sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, instead of using the word “Salat” to
mean multiple meanings at the same time (mercy, supplication and praise), it is appropriate to use one meaning of the
word “Salat” i.e. honor, praise and greetings to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
The original purpose of the verse was to command the Muslims to send blessings and greetings to the Messenger of
Allah, instead of using the word “Salat” to mean multiple meanings at the same time (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him). But it is expressed in such a way that first Allah Himself mentioned sending blessings on Himself and His
angels. Then He ordered the common believers to send blessings.
Most Imams agree that it is obligatory to send blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) “when he mentions or hears his name.”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Woe to the one in whose presence my name is
mentioned and he does not pray.” [Tirmidhi: 3545]
Another hadith states: “Woe to the one in whose presence my name is mentioned and he does not pray.” [Tirmidhi: 3546]
There are many hadiths regarding the virtue of sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him).
For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever sends blessings upon me, the
angels send blessings upon him as long as he continues to send blessings.” [Musnad Ahmad: 1945, Ibn Majah: 907].
He also said, “Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him ten times.” [Muslim: 384].
In another hadith the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The most deserving of being
with me on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who sends blessings upon me the most.” [Tirmidhi: 484].
He also said, “The one in whose presence I am mentioned and who does not send blessings upon me is a miser.”
[Tirmidhi: 3546].
